Vote for Bush or Go to Hell

Saturday, May 07, 2005

This is a very amusing and informative news story. Here's the meat of it.

A pastor of a small Baptist church led an effort to kick out church members because they didn't support President Bush, members said.

The nine members were voted out at a Monday meeting of the East Waynesville Baptist Church. WLOS-TV in Asheville reported that 40 other members resigned in protest.

The informative part is the last sentence, about the forty members of the congregation who resigned in protest. Many Objectivists have held that the supposed resurgence in America of religious belief is, so far at least, a resurgence of lip-service to religion. This story bears this out.

Our nation has not, apparently, quite descended to the dark ages. Where is the unquestioning obedience to the Holy Man? Why aren't these forty souls worried about eternal hellfire for the audacity of questioning their spiritual leader?

This is a very good sign. The American sense of life is alive and well, even in some Baptist churches. Our mullah wannabes will have to try harder, I suppose....

Reason and decency triumph over faith and obedience. My salute, as an atheist who voted for Bush due to the war, to the the Asheville Forty!
