Aging Philosopher Falls for Logical Fallacy

Thursday, December 09, 2004

A British philosopher with one foot in the grave, Antony Flew, has bet the farm he is about to buy on Pascal's wager. He has decided that yes, Virginia, there is a God! On a more serious note, his explicit argument is just a rehash of the ancient argument from design, which is easily refuted by asking, "Who designed the designer?" Clearly, his best work is behind him.

It's amusing to imagine that Flew has made a variant wager (Flew's Wager?) on Pacal's involving more lives than just his own: "Convert, and then publicize your conversion to gain more converts!"

Thanks for giving secularism another mild setback, Dr. Flew! This reminds me of an observation made by Sam Harris in his book, which I am currently reading. He notes that for all the talk of faith, people constantly clamor for evidence. By making this big announcement, you have just made a whole lot of people better able to fool themselves. By lending your authority to their delusions, you have made them more willing to let the purveyors of religious faith tell them what to do with their lives.
