Acronym of the Day: BANANA
Wednesday, July 23, 2025
John Stossel takes a look at the enormous amount of money environmentalists rake in with their emotional catastrophizing and what they spend that money on, and finds a major impediment to progress:
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Sierra Club spend your donations on lawyers. The NRDC filed a new lawsuit every 10 days. This they do to a far greater extent than, say funding nature conservancies, and what they oppose building is often counterproductive by their own standards:
The Center for Biological Diversity has more than 70 active lawsuits, while their executive director brags, "We do more environmental litigation than any other environmental group in the country." [link omitted, bold added]
The Sierra Club brags: "Our legal team has stopped thousands of miles of fossil fuel pipelines and dozens of large power plants."This is on top of stopping things like wind turbines from being built, of course.
But pipelines are better for the earth than shipping oil by truck. [bold added]
The piece is worth reading even with the following spoiler, on what BANANA means, if you haven't already heard: Build Absolutely Nothing, Anywhere, Near Anyone.
If you wondering why it's almost impossible to build anything quickly or inexpensively in America, reconsider donating to environmentalist groups.
