One Meme Leads to Another

Saturday, February 02, 2008

Taking a break from a working Saturday, I stopped by Rational Jenn's, and popped up as "turtle" on her adorable pet meme. True to my tough exterior, I initially (and ironically) decided that the result didn't suit me, so I decided to find another meme, which I did.

If this isn't the definitive Harry Potter quiz, then I don't know what is:

***

Harry Potter Character Compatibility Test

You scored as a Severus Snape

You are Severus Snape. You are solitary, subtle, and secretive. Very few people truly know you. You do not give your loyalty easily. It is difficult for people to analyze you, for you refuse to betray your inner feelings.
Severus Snape

91%
Neville Longbottom

72%
Remus Lupin

66%
Albus Dumbledore

66%
Ron Weasley

63%
Hermione Granger

63%
Percy Weasley

63%
Oliver Wood

59%
Lord Voldemort

56%
Sirius Black

56%
Luna Lovegood

56%
Bellatrix Lestrange

50%
Draco Malfoy

47%
Harry Potter

41%

***

And that's all right with me, since Snape's my favorite adult character in the series!

: (1) Corrected annoying misspelling of "compatibility" by quiz author. (HT: Albus Dumbledore) (2) Noticed that my "adorable pet", the turtle, is a reptile, which is somewhat consistent with Snape's having been a Slytherin. Hmmmm....

I'm supposedly most like Harry Potter, Snape was only 6th or 7th on mine.

I love Snape, and Harry's eager puppy earnestness gets on my nerves.

This stupid thing has thrown me into a fit of introspection. Please tell me that the test is badly flawed.....

I think it's pretty good as far as these things go. I think it describes me reasonably well, and I am frequently told that I am hard to read.

Bellatrix Lestrange? WTF? She was the one I thought most deserved to be vaporized, even more than Voldemort.

Your result should at least make WS feel better!

Apparently, I'm Oliver Wood (also tied by Severus Snape). Knowing next to nothing about Harry Potter, I wonder if that's good or bad.

I've recovered.
As a result of taking Gus's test, I've discovered that I'm really good at Patronus spells.

I cast one around the New York Giants tonight. It was succesful.

Oliver Wood!

"You are Oliver Wood. Relentless, unyielding, hard-working, proud, passionate, and competitive. You're very active and probably prefer to constantly be in motion. Lying around may be very boring to you. You have a lot of energy in you and need to use all of it up."

As with the Potter series, the 'test' is surely based on standard, largely altruistic, moral principles. By that morality, the 'evil' of individualism makes one willing to betray good people to obtain unearned (often corrupt) values. So a match to Snape or Lestrange is likely to be the 'best fit' for Objectivist individualists.

Oliver Wood was the captain of the Quiddich team, and a pretty minor character. I'm a little surprised that the result comes up at all.

Richard's comment regarding the skewing of the test by altruism is on the money. Such problems even occur in real personality tests.
